If your website isn’t ranking where you want it to be you likely either have a brand new website, you’re not doing any SEO work whatsoever, or there is something holding you back. We’re going to focus on the last issue for this article and point out the most common mistakes that are drowning your rankings. All of these mistakes are easily avoidable as well!

1. Keyword Stuffing

If you’re still keyword stuffing in this day and age, you haven’t read anything about SEO in the past 10 years. Search engines can easily pick up on this type of behavior today and will penalize you for it. Don’t do it.

2. Broken Links

Broken links are the easiest problem in the world to fix, but you’d be surprised how often we find them. While doing an SEO audit we once found a broken link to a 404 page that had paid ads running for it. Truly flushing money down the toilet.

3. Copied Content

Everyone knows that it’s important to have content on your website so Google and other search engines know what your site is about. However, simply copying that content from a competitor website is NOT going to help you. At all.

4. Duplicate Content

Duplicate content is a common problem we come across, especially with eCommerce websites as search engines can index multiple instances of the same product with different filters, categories, etc. These problems can be solved with a little know-how.

5. Non-unique titles and Metas

Another issue that doesn’t take too much work to fix, but is often ignored. The title tag is literally the first information a search engine will see and sets the tone for what the entire page is about.

6. Ignoring analytics

Information is invaluable in this industry. Large companies pay research firms millions of dollars to locate and target their ideal demographic, yet we often see so many website owners ignore the free information that is readily available to them.

7. Using meta keywords

Using meta keywords won’t have an effect on your rankings at all, but there’s really no upside to using them. You’re essentially just telling your competitors what phrases you’re trying to rank for. Not smart.

8. Using the wrong keywords

Often times we’ve found that a website is trying to rank for a phrase or word that it shouldn’t be. This can result in a lot of wasted time, money, and effort.

9. Blocking search engines from your website (Yes, we’ve actually seen this)

Not sure why you’re website isn’t coming up in the search engines? Well, if you’re blocking them from indexing your site, that’s unlikely to happen.

10. Not promoting your posts

You just spent over an hour working on an awesome blog post or some other type of engaging content. You post it on your website, but no one knows. You just wasted an hour. Post your content wherever you can where people will find it.

11. Not using social media

A big mistake in today’s world. You’re ignoring over half of the world’s population.

12. Having a slow website

Loading time has become an increasingly important ranking factor, not to mention the average person won’t wait over 3 seconds for your page to load. They’ll just go somewhere else. Don’t let speed hold you back.

13. Not having a plan

Like anything else in life, it’s always good to have a plan. Just diving in and seemingly doing tasks at random isn’t a good SEO strategy. Stay organized and stick to a schedule.

14. Not having a mobile-friendly site

A cardinal sin in today’s SEO world. With 71% of web traffic in the United States accounted for by mobile devices, you simply can’t afford to not have a mobile-friendly website.
